We come to the concluding Part III from Clare Penne’s latest trilogy, ‘Mother & Daughter’, where the story is brought to its conclusion.
Part II dealt with Mattie living together with Jane, her Domme, and submissive housemate, Juliette, Jane taking both of them deeper into the lesbian BDSM world, inter-dispersed with the occasional male. All of this culminated with a rather traumatic split from Jane, Juliette rather irked by Jane’s behaviour. The one good point that came out of it was a deepening friendship between Mattie and Juliette, one that has seen them become joint investors on a number of ‘buy-to-let’ projects to add to their own portfolios.
At the end of Part II, a glimpse of life twenty-five years on was given, this teeing up Part III.
Without giving too much away, via a friend from Uni days and Juliette, Jane gets back in contact with Mattie and, eventually, they agree to meet at the Kinloch House Hotel, near Blairgowrie – and it proves to be not only Jane and Mattie coming together but also Jane’s daughters, Julia and Hannah.
Julia is the one who proves to be a ‘chip off the old block’ when it comes to lesbian domination and she takes more and more to Mattie, Jane slowly releasing the reins so that Julia comes to ‘own’ Mattie.
Tragedy strikes and the story explores the aftermath and the changes undertaken to adapt to life without Jane in terms of Julia managing her family company, property portfolio and other strands such as the still-continuing dinner-companion agency – and this has considerably expanded since Jane, Mattie and Juliette were at St. Andrews.
Mattie faces changes too – even though she has part-retired from her international environmental-financial career to move back to one of her houses in St. Andrews to focus on her research work, extensive property portfolio, mentoring students and providing support to Jane and then Julia as to their family business, she needs to rebalance as well.
Mattie and Julia end up going away on holiday to Western Ireland and there’s quite an earth-shaker of an event that crystallises the need for this balance in life on both sides and Mattie, having taken her own counsel from Juliette and Catherine comes back to Scotland and takes Julia off for a weekend in an almost-unbelievable hotel with its setting in the Dee Valley.
It’s here that things come to a conclusion and I’m not giving away what it is, except that Clare has cleverly brought all her important threads in this story together and using her own history and experience to set everything together with a lot of realism in her familiar ‘Hemingway-esque’ style of writing.
All of us who have been involved in bringing this trilogy to the market hope that you enjoy this final part and the story at that has gradually emerged from Clare’s pen.
